unisex clothing line

Inspiration

This section was created as a result of my long time goal of wanting my own clothing line. Since I was a child I always struggled to be happy with the clothing available to me. I can remember not wanting to attend a few family functions or go to church because I had to wear a dress.

I can remember literally crying and had to be dragged out the door to go.  Luckily my twin sister convinced my mum when we were around 6-7 years old that she didn’t want to dress like me. This, of course, stopped the dresses and the ribbon accessories. I was just a little tom boy growing up.

The truth is I don’t like to wear dresses.  It may sound simple to some but trust me the number of questions I received over the years has made it a difficult subject. Why? Some people (naturally) don’t understand what is the big deal about wearing a dress. Most men don’t mind wearing a suit to functions just as most women don’t mind wearing a dress or skirt. That is not my truth.

Thankfully it is more acceptable now for me to wear pant suits than it was maybe 20 years ago. Also, you make uncomfortable choices because you want to fit in and that is what I did.  So, I can remember wearing a dress to my prom but hated the whole idea.

I didn’t like getting my hair done, wearing heels, or wearing press on nails. I had that same issue when I had to wear a dress for my high school graduation. After I saw the picture  I decided that was the last time I would be wearing a dress. It was something I can control.

As an adult, it has been an ongoing but more acceptable experience. When I interview for jobs I don’t mind wearing dress pants and a shirt because I realize more people are wearing that or pant suits. I used to have a history of turning down weddings and formal functions because I did not want to wear a dress. A part of it was my fault too for just assuming I had to wear one.

During the time, I wasn’t comfortable in my own skin to be the only female wearing pants. Luckily friends and family accept me as I am by not giving me a hard time for not wearing a dress. Thank you. I’ve been able to find some items that work and when I do, I buy a lot of them.   I’m OK with wearing the same clothes weekly or bi-weekly because those are the clothes I like. Yes, I’m also that person that can travel anywhere with 2 pants and 4 shirts.

My goal is to create a unisex clothing brand for all. I have ideas for styles that are not limited to men but available for women too. I see plenty of females wearing their significant other’s clothing because it was comfortable or looked good on them. Why not make those measurements applicable for a female so it can fit perfectly? If anything, this is a personal project of mine. I’ll be satisfied if I’m only able to dress myself in the actual clothing I want to wear.

Clothing Line Goals

This section is dedicated to everyone out there chasing a bigger goal. I plan to learn whatever I can and share with those that are interested in building their own clothing line or just inspired to start their own side hustle. I’m totally open to making this a bigger effort for all “side hustle creatives”.  This section will be limited but updated as I receive the information.

In July, I was fortunate enough to interview Vincent Djen. Please check out his website The Fashion Knowledge Network to learn everything about manufacturing. Vincent does an excellent job providing updated information on the fashion industry.

Make sure you read the articles because it offers great information for those of us that are interested in the fashion industry. I’m learning that the manufacturing is key for any person looking to enter the fashion world. I’ll give a more generous introduction in the next couple of weeks when I’m able to post the interview.
